The Art of Mindful Listening

Introduction to Counselling ~ 8 Week Course

Who is the course for?

This programme is open to any person who wishes to develop effective listening / counselling skills and enhance their own personal development. It is of particular value to anyone wishing to understand themselves and other people better. The course is open to anyone but may appeal to those working in the caring professions and those whose work involves an element of counselling skills.

Entry to the course

There are no formal entry requirements for this programme. Applicants will however be at least 18 years of age and have a genuine interest in the area of counselling.

When and where does the course start and how long will it take?

The course will start on Wednesday 23rd October at a location in Ennis. The course will comprise 8 weekly sessions of 3 hours duration from 6.30 – 9.30 pm with a coffee break in the middle.

What will the course cover?

There are three main elements to the course;

  • Person Centred Model of Counselling: This course will provide a basic overview of the approach developed by Carl Rogers and explores the range of listening techniques applied within this counselling model.

  • Skills Practice: Participants will have the opportunity to work in small groups called triads, to practice the various counselling techniques covered by the programme. Here they are encouraged to integrate theory with practice and further develop their skills.

  • Personal Development: As this is an essential element of counselling training, participants are encouraged to be open and share some of their real life experiences and feelings in their group work. They will also be asked to keep a personal journal to log their personal growth while on the programme.

How is the course assessed?

To successfully complete the programme and gain a Certificate of Attendance, participants must attend at least 80% of the programme, including the final session. While there is no formal assessment procedure, participants will be encouraged to keep a journal of their personal development over the 8 weeks and actively contribute to the sessions.

Future Prospects?

This 8 week course provides an introduction to the area of person centred counselling and can provide the basis for further training in counselling skills.

What does the course cost?

The cost of the course is €160 in total. A deposit of €50 is required to secure your place with the balance payable on the first night of the programme. Please note that certificates will be only be issued when the tutor is in receipt of the full course fee.
